Teaching, editing
and coaching
My primary school teacher ambitions ended after my appalling scissor-skills resulted in the mutilation of some expensive gold cardboard during high school work experience (there’s that left-handed thing again).
Despite seeing the disappointment on the faces of the kids who were presented with very dubious gold medals (not to mention the dismay of their teacher), the desire to teach never deserted me.
Fortunately, I’ve found a scissor-free zone. I now teach and tutor at the Australian Writers’ Centre, as well as offering one-on-one editing and coaching.
There are so many benefits of working with AWC but perhaps the absolute best part is that the fabulous team are whizzes at all the important stuff of enrolments, reminders, communication and technology, leaving me to focus on your learning.

Opinion Writing Course
I created a course for those wanting to write opinion pieces, whether for publication in mainstream media or on their own blogs or socials.
Offered via the Australian Writers’ Centre, it’s an online four-week course that allows you to complete modules at times that suit you, ask questions as you go and get quality feedback on your writing.
Superbly organised and structured.

Vivienne’s sharing was so generous and her feedback was exceptional.

Freelance Writing Stage 1 (Australian Writer’s Centre)
I’m a tutor for AWC’s flagship course, Freelance Writing Stage 1. It’s a five-week online course that runs across set dates; ideal for anyone (like me) who enjoys company on your learning journey and benefits from a deadline to sharpen the mind.
This course allows you to explore the wider world of feature writing. What you learn applicable to writing everything from news-related features through to travel and food writing.

Vivienne’s feedback is excellent, it’s very focussed and she offers great suggestions.

I liked that Vivienne was able to provide insight into the freelance writing industry as well as the writing side of things.

Individual editing and coaching
Courses are great but sometimes a more individual approach is best.
Perhaps you’ve already done a feature or opinion writing course via AWC (or elsewhere) and need personalised assistance and encouragement to put that learning into practice.
Or, perhaps you can’t (or don’t want to) commit to a whole course and have questions you’d like to explore on a one-on-one basis or a draft article that you’d like edited.
Maybe you’re a more experienced writer who is stuck with a pitch or a draft and is looking for a second-pair of eyes in order to focus on how to improve.
I’m available for a sharp-eyed edit of a piece or pitch, an opportunity to ‘ask me anything’ or assistance with developing your ideas, improving your writing and gaining industry insights.
Coaching can be a short-cut to success and, whether you’re a new or more experienced wordsmith, a powerful boost to your writing,
I learned new approaches and skills to improve my own writing.
How much might editing or coaching cost?
I totally get that cost is a top-of-mind consideration, no matter whether writing is your day-job or your personal passion. To help you consider whether we might be a good match, I’ve created options based on approaches that other writers have found helpful.

FAQs
How much are the courses you run, how do they work and when do they start?
The amazing team at the Australian Writers’ Centre take care of scheduling, logistics, enrolments, queries and tech-help, allowing me to focus on teaching and feedback. So, head to their website to and, if either the Opinion Writing or Freelance Writing Stage 1 course seems right, I look forward to seeing you soon!
When are you available for coaching sessions?
I have good availability (including for urgent help with time-sensitive pieces). I generally offer sessions during between 8:30AM – 5:00PM on Monday afternoons, Wednesdays and Fridays, but can consider an evening or weekend if that’s your only option.
Can we meet in person rather than via phone or video?
Probably not (though if you live in the Byron Shire, we can consider this). Using Zoom or other video platforms is a time-efficient way of meeting and it’s works well for coaching.
